Eulogy Read at The Funeral Service

PHILIP HOLLEY was born in Exeter exactly 61 years ago today, one of 6 children of Dot and Fred Holley. There were 3 brothers Brian, Michael and Tony and 2 sisters Lizzie and Cathy. To say Phil was a bit of a rogue might be an understatement – as I looked for examples Jane told me of the driving ban he received before he was old enough to drive. Debs recalled how she would meet people who may have known her Dad and there was a great sense of trepidation until she found out if they had good or not so good memories of him. Phil met Jane through family connections and motor bike scrambling. Phil saw Jane and asked her brother if he would introduce him. They were married within a year following a proposal along the lines of – well I suppose we’d better get married. Jane’s mum was worried about her not completing her nursing training at Great Ormond St and Phil shrugged his shoulders and said – well that’s up to Jane. So they married in 1970 and came to Benidorm for their honeymoon – just £29 each for a weeks honeymoon – full board. Phil and Jane lived in Exmouth and had two children both here today. Debs is married to Toby and they have two children Sam 4 and Todd 2 and half. Stu is living in New Zealand and is engaged to Selina. They are due to marry soon. Phil started his working life as a labourer and then became a lorry driver- no licence – then a plasterer and again a lorry driver – transport manager- grain dealer and golf director. Phil worked at Woodbury Park Golf Course as Director working for owner Nigel Mansell. Working for someone so famous can have its advantages and when Debs was in the RAF serving at Manston Nigel Mansell landed there in his private plane for a golf match nearby. Debs took a lead out of her father´s book and talked Nigel into giving her a lift home to Devon. A 6 hour road journey was reduced to 45 minutes. Of course Jane had to tell people that Phil had passed away and when the staff at Woodbury Park heard they lowered the flags to half mast. It was 2001 when Phil and Jane moved to Spain and Phil took on the job of Golf Marshall. I believe some of you here today will have encountered Phil as he undertook his duties which I understand include harassing golfers to get a move on etc – a job I believe he was well suited to. There are I think many stories about Phil’s time here in Spain but none which could be told to Jane. Phil will be sorely missed.
